Our Organization

The Finnish Language School of Toronto is a charitable organization and a community founded by parents in 1960. Our school is primarily run by volunteers, and the school only exists with the incredible volunteer efforts of the many. Active volunteers, funding from the Government of Finland, school fees and fundraising have helped to support the school for over 60 years. We are grateful for the work of our community to keep us going and growing over the years.

If you are interested in volunteering or joining the teaching team, please read more below and contact us.

If you have any questions, please get in touch with Tiina Salo-Devries, the Principal or Minna Temisevä, the Executive Director: info@suomikoulutoronto.org.

Volunteer

Would you like to join the incredible team of Volunteers? Options range from permanent leader roles to occasional help and acts of kindness. Volunteering is a synonym for taking care of our school community.

Most volunteers are parents. For example, the Board of Directors is like a parent council, and responsible for all the necessary administrative tasks of the school. As parents, board members know the school well, are committed, offer a wide variety of essential skills, and ensure the school follows all requirements and letters of the law. Also, most teachers and assistants are parents or former Suomi-koulu students.

We are a small but mighty team and a wonderful community to be part of. Still, we also need more human resources. The more volunteers and resources we have, the more active community we are and the more versatile activities we can implement for our children and families.

Volunteer opportunities are many, and the options range from helping in fundraising, administration or organizing events to simply helping with carrying tables and making coffee. While we need volunteers during school hours, most work happens outside school. Therefore most volunteering is invisible to the public eye but essential for running the school.

Here are examples of different kinds of tasks and roles:

  • Financial Team (e.g. bookkeeping, budgeting, funding applications, reporting, taxes, insurance, paying bills)

  • Administration (e.g. registrations, AGM, annual plans and reporting, documentation, job descriptions, protocols)

  • IT support (e.g. equipment purchases and maintenance support)

  • Running the Library and the School Shop

  • Catering Team (e.g. catering for events)

  • Parents' Social during school hours

  • -Assisting in the classrooms

Note that some companies offer volunteer grants, encouraging their employees to volunteer. In turn, the employer provides a donation to your chosen organization.

We are committed to finding a suitable role for anyone interested in helping the school community! We appreciate all the extra hands and are thankful for every volunteer and help! If you are interested and want to know more or share an idea, please email info@suomikoulutoronto.org.
